Delaying the Closure of Berlin-Tegel Airport's U6 Line until May 2027.
New and Improved Version:
U-Bahn line 6 in Berlin may face prolonged closure again. That's the buzz from a current construction tender for Borsigwerke U-Bahn station. Berlin's public transport company (BVG), is on the hunt for contractors to demolish and rebuild three of the four surface staircases, as per the tender.
The construction work is planned to kick off in October 2025 and wrap up by no later than 30 April 2027. According to the tender, the construction can progress during the day, as the U-Bahn station will be closed to passengers. Moreover, the tracks will be available for work train journeys due to other construction measures. However, this doesn't suggest that service will resume before 1 May 2027.
In previous reports, it was reported that the line was slated for a reopening in the second half of 2026. Upon request, BVG confirms that they still adhere to this timeline, with a possible more precise date announcement by the end of 2025.
Importantly, the projected construction end date doesn't necessarily herald the conclusion of the entire project. As the BVG explains, a time buffer is always built-in to accommodate possible delays on the construction site.

The upcoming construction project at Borsigwerke U-Bahn station in Berlin, set to begin in October 2025, could potentially disrupt the operation of U-Bahn line 6 and possibly extend beyond the projected end date, impacting the broader public-transit industry. This closure might also have implications on the city's overall transportation network, particularly in terms of finance, as the city government may need to allocate additional resources to facilitate alternative modes of transportation during the construction period.
