Digital Progress Continues: eID.li 2.0 Advances Liechtenstein's Digital Agenda

In a significant move towards digital innovation, Liechtenstein has unveiled the updated version of its electronic identity (eID) platform, eID.li 2.0. This upgrade positions the country as a leader in the digital identity landscape, enabling it to swiftly and efficiently implement future requirements, particularly those of the EU-wide EUDI Wallet.

The new eID.li 2.0, developed by youniqx Identity - a subsidiary of the Austrian OeSD - incorporates technological advancements that bring significant improvements in security, speed, flexibility, certification compliance, and sustainability. These advancements are reflected in the latest government ID solutions, such as Infineon's SECORA™ ID V2 and eID-OS platforms.

The SECORA ID V2 offers advanced cryptography along with a powerful 32-bit CPU, enabling faster and more secure identity verification transactions, with processing times under 0.5 seconds. This makes identity checks at borders and security checkpoints quick and smooth.

Both SECORA ID V2 and eID-OS provide flexible, all-in-one solutions for local government ID projects, offering support for various packaging options such as coil-on-module technology. This flexibility helps local security printers and card manufacturers to tailor solutions to their project needs, reducing development time and costs.

The eID-OS is designed to meet Common Criteria Evaluation Assurance Level (CC EAL) 5+ certification for electronic machine-readable travel documents (eMRTD), assuring interoperability and compliance with stringent EU and international security standards.

Optimized for cost and performance, eID-OS simplifies implementation and maintenance, while the ultra-thin contactless coil-on-module packaging reduces document thickness and carbon footprint, aligning with EU sustainability goals.

While not explicitly detailed in the sources, eID.li 2.0 and associated solutions are developed with EU digital identity frameworks in mind, ensuring compatibility across EU member states for cross-border recognition and use, which is critical for seamless EU-wide eID adoption.

The eID.li app, now available in both German and English, has also been improved. Activating new ID documents in the app has been made easier and faster, and users can now receive push notifications directly in the app. eID.li 2.0 brings a completely redesigned interface for a more intuitive and user-friendly experience.

With its modular development approach, eID.li is well-positioned for future EIDAS 2.0 regulations. The platform offers users secure access to various official administrative services and digital IDs like the mobile driver's license and digital border crossing confirmation in Liechtenstein.

The international standard ISO/IEC 18013-5 for digital driver's licenses has been successfully implemented in eID.li. During the COVID pandemic, eID.li integrated the international vaccination passport into the official eID, simplifying its use.

First introduced in 2020, the digital ID platform "eID.li" has reaffirmed Liechtenstein's leading role in digital innovation. Helmut Lackner, CEO of youniqx Identity AG and Director General of OeSD, announced the next major milestone for eID.li as version 2.0, emphasising the importance of digital identity being both secure and user-friendly. Improved security measures have been implemented to protect eID.li when offline.

In 2023, eID.li received official notification from the EU, signifying a significant step for Liechtenstein in its digital journey. With eID.li 2.0, the Principality of Liechtenstein continues to set the pace in digital innovation, providing its citizens with a secure, efficient, and user-friendly digital identity solution.

The new eID.li 2.0, a product of youniqx Identity, incorporates advancements in technology that enhance security, efficiency, and flexibility, aligning with EU digital identity frameworks. This technology is reflected in government ID solutions like Infineon's SECORA™ ID V2 and eID-OS platforms, which offer secure, user-friendly solutions for business and finance, ensuring compatibility across EU member states.
