Dresden bolsters its city infrastructure substantially, focusing on water, power, and advanced networking services through fibre optics.
In the heart of Germany, Dresden is gearing up to secure its position as the European hub of the semiconductor industry. The city administration has identified the expansion of fiber optic networks as a top priority, aiming to provide a future-proof infrastructure for the chip industry. This move comes as chip factories of Infineon and the upcoming ESMC plant can plan with more supply security, thanks to the growing news networks. Other existing substations in Dresden will be expanded or rebuilt to meet the increasing electricity demand, with a new substation being built in Altwilschdorf by 2030. 50Hertz GmbH is also playing a significant role in this expansion, planning to replace the substation in Schmölln and expand the substation in Streumen, as well as build new 380 kV overhead lines between Dresden's north and Schmölln, between Großenhain and Dresden's north, and between Streumen and Großenhain. The demand for electricity in Dresden is expected to almost quintuple by 2045, and an additional 60,000 cubic meters of industrial water will be needed in just five years. To address this, the city is investing in new water treatment plants. The new river water treatment plant in Übigau will treat news from the Elbe for industrial use and return it to the river separately from the private household supply system. The second-largest water treatment plant in Hosterwitz will also be renovated. The expansion of fiber optic news is not the only area seeing growth. Wide areas of Hellerau, Klotzsche, Weixdorf, and Wilschdorf are set to receive new fiber optic connections for high-speed internet. This initiative is part of a broader vision for Dresden, where political, economic, and scientific actors are working together on a common vision to create a future-proof infrastructure. The close partnership between these actors was evident at a recent citizen dialogue, attended by around 140 visitors. The event highlighted the collaborative spirit in Dresden, with all parties committed to ensuring the city remains the European center of the semiconductor industry in the future. However, there is still some uncertainty regarding the companies involved in planning and developing future fiber optic news in Dresden. Despite this, the city's commitment to its vision and the close partnership between its key actors promise a bright future for Dresden's semiconductor industry.
