Dubai Materializes Plans for Autonomous Transportation with Baidu's Apollo Project Advancement
In a significant move towards the future of transportation, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has partnered with Baidu's Apollo Go to introduce a fleet of driverless taxis in the city. The collaboration was formalised with a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in April 2025.
The project, which aligns with Dubai's Smart Self-Driving Transport Strategy, aims for 25% of all trips to be autonomous by 2030, is set to revolutionise Dubai's transportation landscape. The initiative is part of Dubai's broader vision to lead in sustainable and advanced transport solutions.
The partnership is significant for the development of autonomous driving technology in Dubai. The project, initially, will see the introduction of 50 autonomous vehicles from Baidu (Apollo Go), along with WeRide and Cruise, starting in 2025. These vehicles will be deployed for operational trials, with a focus on ensuring the safety and reliability of the autonomous driving technology.
Initially, the trials will be conducted with safety officers present to monitor the operations. However, the long-term goal is to integrate autonomous taxis into Dubai's public transportation system, enhancing the city's infrastructure and technology landscape.
Baidu's Apollo Go is expanding globally, leveraging its technological capabilities and the financial backing from Baidu. The company has shown strong growth in Robotaxi operations, with millions of cumulative rides provided worldwide. This collaboration paves the way for safer, more efficient transportation in Dubai.
The partnership is in line with the UAE's ambition to be at the forefront of autonomous driving innovation. Mattar Al Tayer, the Director-General and Chairman of the RTA in Dubai, has expressed enthusiasm for the partnership. Baidu's Niu has emphasised the strategic importance of the collaboration.
The collaboration is expected to improve the quality of life in Dubai by offering a more efficient and sustainable transportation solution. It also supports Dubai's goal of being a global leader in sustainable and advanced transport solutions. The partnership aims to drive forward Dubai's mobility transformation, contributing towards a smarter, more connected city.
