Economic Crisis Forces Closures and Departures in Spanish Fashion Industry

The fashion industry has faced significant challenges due to the economic crisis, with several prominent designers announcing their departure or closure of their businesses. Elio Berhanyer, Carmen March, and David Delfin are among those affected, while El Delgado Buil has temporarily ceased operations.

Elio Berhanyer, a Cordovan designer with nearly five decades in the industry, left the fashion world in December 2010 due to the economic crisis. Similarly, Carmen March, a Mallorcan designer, was forced to close her only store and workshop in Madrid in March 2021 due to low sales. David Delfin also had to close his Madrid store due to the economic downturn.

El Delgado Buil, founded in 2004, faced difficulties in boosting its brand image due to unmet sales expectations. The designers, Anna Figuera Delgado and Macarena Ramos Buil, have ceased their business project temporarily. They plan to continue working in the industry as teachers and are seeking new collaboration projects. Anna Figuera has already signed a contract with a national fashion firm, although the details are not yet disclosed. Meanwhile, Escorpión, owned by the Biosca Riera group, is currently facing insolvency proceedings.

The economic crisis has led to the closure of stores and workshops, and the temporary cessation of business projects for several prominent designers in the Spanish fashion industry. Despite these challenges, some designers like Anna Figuera Delgado are finding new opportunities, and others are exploring new roles within the industry.
