Elon Musk relinquishes his positions in the government.

Elon Musk, the tech billionaire and CEO of Tesla, has resigned from his advisory role in the Trump administration's councils. The White House confirmed his departure, with the "off-boarding" process set to commence on Wednesday evening (local time).

Musk expressed his thanks to US President Donald Trump for the opportunity, but used the term "punching bag" to describe his experience. According to a source, there was no conversation between Trump and Musk prior to the latter's decision to step down. Musk's resignation was made at the highest level.

Musk's tenure as a special government employee was scheduled to end around May 30. His role, which granted him unprecedented authority to dismantle parts of the US government, was established in December 2016. Musk defended his role despite international protests and calls from some Tesla investors for him to focus solely on the company.

The departure of Musk comes amidst nationwide protests following George Floyd's death and widespread dissatisfaction with Trump's response, which many viewed as divisive. Musk publicly announced that he could no longer sit on the councils due to the president's handling of the unrest.

In a separate development, Tesla sales plummeted by over 50% in April, the day before Musk's resignation. The billionaire had criticized the costs of the Republican tax and spending bills, directly referencing Trump's "Big Beautiful Bill." Musk felt that the bill increased the deficit rather than reducing it, undermining the work of the DOGE team.

Musk had previously expressed frustration over his agency being used as a "punching bag" for any issues, regardless of its involvement. His political activities have sparked international protests, and some Tesla investors have called for him to step down from his role as Trump's advisor.
