Energy conservation urged amidst heatwave, strain on power supply at peak levels

In the face of an ongoing intense heatwave and soaring temperatures, the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy in Kuwait has called for electricity conservation to help stabilize the power grid and avoid power outages.

The ministry's appeal is particularly urgent during peak hours, identified as between 11:00 am and 5:00 pm, when electricity demand is at its highest during heatwaves. With temperatures regularly exceeding 47°C and sometimes topping 50°C, the current climate conditions are placing unprecedented pressure on Kuwait's energy infrastructure.

Residents are urged to adopt energy-saving habits, such as avoiding the use of non-essential electrical appliances during peak hours, setting air conditioning thermostats to around 24°C, raising thermostat temperatures in unused rooms or areas, and turning off unnecessary appliances and lighting during these critical periods.

The ministry emphasizes the importance of collective voluntary rationalization, noting that a 10% reduction in peak load consumption can save approximately 1,764 megawatts, enough to prevent scheduled power cuts. This conservative behaviour is considered a shared social responsibility.

The ministry conducts continuous public awareness campaigns and advises the public to rely on official communications channels such as their website, Instagram, and the government "Sahel" app for updates.

The ministry's call for action is in response to the electrical load index reaching close to the critical 17,000-megawatt mark on Monday, with temperatures reaching a staggering 51°C on the same day. Outages during periods of high demand could potentially be prevented with community-wide action.

Adopting energy-saving habits is encouraged to maintain overall grid efficiency and ensure the stability of the national electricity grid. Public cooperation is essential to help maintain the stability of the grid and avoid power outages during these challenging times.

  1. The urgent need for energy conservation in Kuwait, prompted by the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy, is linked to the increasing pressure on the country's energy infrastructure due to global climate-change effects.
  2. In anticipation of maintaining the stability of the national electricity grid, it's crucial for residents to engage in environmental-science practices such as reducing peak load consumption, thus lowering demands from the industry and finance sectors that rely on energy.
  3. As the Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy faces the challenge of preventing power outages due to soaring temperatures, it is imperative for the public to adopt energy-saving habits and embrace the shared social responsibility in supporting climate-change mitigation efforts through alternative energy solutions.
