The rail traffic landscape in Berlin is set for a significant transformation, with the redesigned Airport Express Line (Flughafenexpresslinie FEX) under the infrastructure program i2030 set to make its debut from mid-December 2025. This project, aimed at reducing travel time between Berlin Hauptbahnhof and BER Airport to less than 20 minutes, promises improved frequency and new routing to revolutionise travel in the region.

One of the most anticipated changes is the introduction of the new RE20 train line from Lübbenau in the Spreewald to BER Airport. This line, scheduled to start operation at the timetable change, will not only run via the Berlin main station but also Berlin Ostkreuz, providing two trains per hour in the direction of the airport.

Another significant development is the extension of the RB24 train line from Eberswalde to the airport BER. Currently ending at Alt-Schoenefeld, the RB24 line will now run all the way to the airport, marking a significant improvement in connectivity.

The Dresden Line, which is set to begin operation on December 14, 2025, is a major new opening in the region, marking the largest change in many years. The Dresden Line will run via different stations compared to the S-Bahn line S2, as it will not run via the Anhalter Bahn. Despite this, the line will still provide a connection to the Dresden Line between Südkreuz and Blankenfelde.

The expansion of the Dresden Line will allow for joint use of S, regional, and long-distance traffic, further enhancing the convenience of travel in the region. From February 2026, the RE32 train line will run from Oranienburg to BER once an hour, adding another layer of connectivity to the revamped rail network.

The redesigned Airport Express Line (Flughafenexpresslinie FEX) under the infrastructure program i2030 is set to bring about a new era of travel in Berlin and its surrounding regions. With improved frequency, new routing, and reduced travel times, the future of rail travel in Berlin is looking brighter than ever.
