EPA Awards $2.4M to Advance Environmental Justice in Puerto Rico

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced $2.4 million in funding for four projects in Puerto Rico, aimed at advancing environmental justice. This initiative aligns with President Biden's Justice40 initiative and is supported by the Inflation Reduction Act, which provides $3 billion for such projects.

The EPA's Environmental Justice Collaborative Problem-Solving (EJCPS) program has awarded over $1.6 million to small non-governmental organizations in Puerto Rico. These groups, with 5 or fewer full-time employees, focus on addressing environmental justice issues in vulnerable communities. Their projects involve pollution reduction, environmental education, community capacity building, and health risk mitigation.

The Municipality of Vega Baja received over $978,000 for its project aimed at preventing and eliminating blighted properties and associated health risks. Additionally, Atma Connect, PathStone Corporation, and Sociedad Ambiente Marino were each awarded $500,000 for their respective projects in Puerto Rico. EPA Regional Administrator Lisa F. Garcia stated that these grants demonstrate the EPA's commitment to environmental justice in Puerto Rico.

The EPA's funding, supported by the Inflation Reduction Act, directly advances President Biden's Justice40 initiative. It aims to deliver 40% of federal investment benefits to disadvantaged communities. Jenniffer González Colón, Resident Commissioner, welcomed the announcement and congratulated the selected organizations, highlighting the importance of these projects in achieving cleaner air and water, and implementing climate resilience solutions.
