EU Parliament Extends Emission-Free Truck Exemption to 2031
The German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) and the European automotive industry association ACEA have both welcomed the EU Parliament's decision to extend the exemption for emission-free trucks. The Parliament approved a legislative proposal to extend the exemption until June 30, 2031.
Under the new rules, EU member states can exempt emission-free trucks from CO2-based road usage charges. Each country can decide whether to grant a full exemption or a reduced rate. Currently, only two EU member states offer a full exemption, while ten apply reduced rates. However, 15 member states do not use this tool at all for emission-heavy trucks and buses. The EU Commission previously proposed to exempt emission-free trucks from toll charges beyond 2025 to boost the sale of electrically powered trucks.
The extension of the exemption for emission-free trucks is seen as a crucial step to accelerate the transition to climate-neutral road transport. The decision allows member states flexibility in implementing the exemption while encouraging the adoption of electric trucks across the EU.
