EU Pushes CCUS for Hard-to-Abat Sectors in 2050 Climate Drive

The European Union is pushing forward with its ambitious climate goals. A new consultation, building on the 2040 Climate Target Communication, focuses on carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) for hard-to-abate sectors. This comes as the EU reaffirms its commitment to achieving climate neutrality by 2050.

The consultation, set to inform the Commission's planned legislation in the third quarter of 2026, is open until 9 January 2026. It seeks public input on upcoming EU legislation and impact assessments regarding CO markets and infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the German government has begun consulting industry on its second carbon contracts for difference (CCFD) scheme. This supports industries switching to lower carbon operations using hydrogen, CCUS, biomass, and electricity.

The Industrial Carbon Management Strategy recognises the need for legislative initiatives to develop competitive markets and transportation infrastructure for CO. The European Commission, aiming for climate neutrality by 2050, is scaling up clean energy infrastructure and technologies like CO infrastructure and storage.

The EU's commitment to climate neutrality by 2050 is driving these consultations and initiatives. The public is invited to contribute to the open consultation, with the EU Commission planning to present its future CO2 management strategy by February 6, 2024.
