New Premium Electric SUV Hits the Market: The Smart #5

The automotive world is abuzz with excitement as a news player enters the premium mid-size electric SUV segment. The Smart #5, comparable in size to a Toyota RAV4, is set to make its debut in New Zealand early next year.

This mid-size SUV, built by the renowned manufacturer Smart, has already made a significant impact on the global stage, receiving a five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP in 2025. The Smart #5 joins its siblings, the Smart #1 and Smart #3, in achieving this prestigious accolade.

The Smart #5's safety features are second to none. Its body, a steel-aluminium hybrid, is made up of 82 percent high-strength material, providing a robust safety cage around its occupants. This robust design has earned the Smart #5 the highest overall safety score among all large SUVs tested by Euro NCAP in 2025.

The Smart #5's safety credentials extend beyond its sturdy structure. It boasts full coverage of high-strength materials on the side doors and rear door opening area, ensuring maximum protection in the event of a collision.

In terms of performance, the Smart #5 doesn't disappoint. It's built on an 800-volt platform that supports ultra-fast DC charging of up to 400kW. This means that the 100kWh battery of the Smart #5 can charge from 10 to 80 percent in just 18 minutes with 400kW DC charging.

For those seeking a more powerful option, a high-performance 475kW AWD Brabus model of the Smart #5 has been revealed. A 100kWh AWD Smart #5 model is available globally, with a range of models offering battery sizes varying from 76kWh to 100kWh.

Model, specification, and pricing for the New Zealand market have not been revealed yet. However, with its impressive safety features, high-performance capabilities, and eco-friendly credentials, the Smart #5 is sure to make a strong impact in our local market.

The Smart #5 will be competing against established players in the premium mid-size electric SUV segment, such as the VW ID.4 and Tesla Model Y. With its combination of safety, performance, and style, the Smart #5 is poised to offer a compelling alternative for environmentally-conscious consumers.

Stay tuned for more updates on the Smart #5's New Zealand launch next year.
