European Commission Contributed to the Report on European Social Fund Execution

As of January 1, 2024, the German Bundestag, with the Bundesrat's approval on September 29, 2023, has abolished children's passports. This decision was made to simplify the administrative process for parents and avoid the need for regular, annual application or renewal of a child's travel document.

Existing children's passports that are still valid until the end of 2024 can continue to be used until their expiration. However, no new children's passports are issued, extended, or updated since the beginning of 2024. Each family member now needs a personal ID for travel within the European Union. For travel outside the EU, a travel passport is required for all family members.

The city office of Gießen advises all parents and guardians to check, before the start of the Easter travel season, whether valid passports and IDs are available for all family members. Information on the required documents and appointment booking can be found on the city office's website.

The production time for travel passports at the Federal Printing Office GmbH has increased significantly since the beginning of 2024, taking approximately eight weeks or more. There is an option to place an express order for a passport, which will cost an additional 32.00 € and usually be ready for collection within three days.

It's important to note that some countries have the rule that the travel document must have a certain remaining validity, usually three to six months. The exact entry requirements for the destination country can be found on the Federal Foreign Office's website.

The reason for the abolition of the children's travel document is that it did not contain a chip. The new situation regarding children's travel documents was caused by a decision from the Federal Ministry of the Interior.

The previous children's travel document had a maximum validity of 12 months, often causing problems when entering other countries. These documents are no longer issued, extended, or updated. Instead, each family member now requires a personal ID for travel within the EU and a travel passport for travel outside the EU.

For more information and a notice of which passports can be collected, please visit the city office's website. It's essential to plan ahead and ensure that you have the necessary travel documents for your family's trips.
