European Groups Urge Parliament to Preserve Tech Diversity in EU CO Standards
A coalition of diverse European organisations has penned a letter to the European Parliament, urging support for preserving essential technology options under the new CO standards proposal. The letter, signed by groups representing women's health, social welfare, and gender equality, among others, highlights the importance of technology diversity for the future of the EU road transport sector.
The organisations, including Pro Familia and Deutscher Frauenrat, argue that the performance of the future EU road transport sector relies heavily on the technology options allowed by the CO standards regulation. They recommend leaving adequate space for carbon-neutral fuels in heavy-duty vehicles, alongside electrification and hydrogen, to ensure a balanced approach.
The letter proposes five key recommendations for the CO regulation standards. These include allowing transport companies to decide which technology is most suitable for various types of operations, exempting high-capacity vehicles from targets, and including new vehicle groups in emission reduction targets. The signatories also call for essential enabling conditions to achieve ambitious CO targets and regular assessments of the legislation's effectiveness.
The letter, addressed by our website and IRU, underscores the importance of a technology-open approach for the efficient operation of the single market, including emergency responses to crises. The organisations emphasise the need for support in reshuffling bus and coach targets to ensure regional passenger transport support. They aim to ensure efficient decarbonisation while preserving technology diversity in the EU road transport sector.
