Impact of Steel and Aluminum Tariffs on Bergish Economy

The steel and aluminum tariffs imposed by the US President in June have raised concerns for Bergish companies, particularly those in the metal-processing sector. According to Dr. Andreas Groß, Vice President of the Bergische IHK, the trade deal has unfavorable consequences for the economy.

These tariffs are expected to significantly impact many export-heavy companies in the region. The specific outcome of the trade deal is said to be very one-sided in favor of the Americans, with the steel and aluminum tariffs not being addressed by negotiators.

Despite these challenges, the Bergisch region is still projected to grow in 2025, partly reflecting the influence of US tariffs on steel imports. The region's metal-processing sector seems resilient, with companies adapting to the trade landscape by innovating, shifting sourcing strategies, and exploring aluminum uses where weight and ease of handling are factors.

The tariffs have increased the cost of raw materials for metal-processing companies, potentially squeezing profit margins or forcing price adjustments. However, the sector's resilience may offset some of these impacts, providing opportunities for companies to leverage aluminum's properties and focus on product differentiation and efficiency.

Indirect effects of the tariffs are also occurring, with affected companies trying to offset costs through savings on supplies. This is causing ripples across related industries, such as construction and machinery, where aluminum is used.

The reliability of promises from Washington regarding the trade agreement remains to be seen, according to Dr. Groß. Further negotiations regarding the steel and aluminum tariffs are scheduled for the coming weeks.

Michael Wenge, CEO of the Bergische IHK, emphasizes that the 50 percent tariff rate is a burden for Bergish companies, given the high number of metal-processing companies in the region. The IHK is participating in a nationwide survey on the trade agreement, which the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce will launch in the coming week.

The Bergisch region has many companies that are heavily dependent on exports, making them vulnerable to tariff increases. Products from the Bergisch region exported to the USA will now mostly face a 15 percent tariff, making some goods unprofitable to export to the USA.

If the trade dispute is prolonged, the consequences for the economy would likely be more severe, according to Dr. Groß. The Bergische IHK encourages companies to adapt, innovate, and explore new opportunities to navigate these challenges and continue to grow in the coming years.
