EV Summit Panel Explores 'Second Life' Batteries' Potential and Challenges
The EV Infrastructure and Energy Summit in London, held on October 1, hosted a panel discussion titled 'Second Life Batteries: Unlocking Value Before Recycling'. Despite the intriguing topic, details about the participants and their roles remain unclear.
The panel explored the challenges and benefits of repurposing EV batteries for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). While these 'second life' batteries offer environmental advantages, they face hurdles in pricing, performance, and safety. The cost parity between new and second life modules has also weakened the business case for the latter.
Galp's innovation unit manager, Pedro Miguel Ferreira, presented a case study on second life BESS in Madrid. However, the company's head of renewables and commercial innovation centre, Carla Tavares, raised uncertainties about the lifespan and safety of such projects.
Despite the lack of information about the panel's participants, the discussion highlighted the complexities and uncertainties surrounding the use of second life batteries in BESS. While they provide environmental benefits, the challenges in pricing, performance, and safety need to be addressed before they can be widely adopted.
