Gasifying Kazakhstan: A New Era for Energy

Expanding Gas Supply Reach in Kazakhstan: 12.8 Million Residents to Benefit This Year

Get ready to light up homes across Kazakhstan! By the end of this year, the country aims to complete 60 gasification projects in 71 populated areas, providing natural gas access to an additional 218,000 people, bringing the total to a staggering 12.8 million people with gas in their pipes.

Why's this a big deal? In 2023, Kazakhstan produced a whopping 59 billion cubic meters of natural gas, with plans to ramp up production to 62.8 billion cubic meters in 2025. This growth will primarily be driven by major fields like Tengiz, Karachaganak, and Kashagan, as well as emerging fields like Rozhkovskoye, Anabai, and Urikhtau.

But wait, there's more! Kazakhstan's long-term goal is to churn out 74 billion cubic meters of gas by 2030, a strategic move to support domestic energy needs, develop gas-based industries, and solidify their position as a key gas hub in the region.

Now, let's talk consumption. In 2024, around 79% of marketable gas, or 21.2 billion cubic meters, was used domestically. Luckily, we can expect a similar consumption volume in 2025, with just a slight uptick to 21.3 billion cubic meters. As for exports, well, Kazakhstan has its sights set on becoming a major regional player, so who knows what the future holds!

To make it all happen, Kazakhstan is building four new gas processing plants, including two stages of the Kashagan plant, the Karachaganak plant, and a plant in Zhanaozen. Oh, and did we mention plans for an LNG complex in Astana to support expanded LNG capabilities and regional gas market engagement?

All in all, Kazakhstan's strategy is clear: maximize domestic gas processing, create a raw material base for gas chemistry projects, and watch the country (and its economy) grow. Welcome to the era of gasification!
