The German national rail service, Deutsche Bahn, intends to enhance passenger numbers and boost occupancy rates in long-distance trains by launching new discount campaigns. In the initial four months, the occupancy rate remained at 44 percent, marginally higher than the previous year but considerably short of the company's annual target of 50 percent.

In April specifically, demand fluctuated due to prolonged travel times at construction sites, causing many potential passengers to seek alternative transportation. The reduced occupancy has also been attributed to extended trains being deployed on busy routes and traditionally lower occupancy rates in the early months of the year.

However, Deutsche Bahn aims to attract a substantial influx of passengers, particularly during the upcoming holidays. To achieve this, the state-owned company is offering a variety of discounts for different passenger groups, including young, senior, business travelers, and regular passengers. Early bookers making reservations more than four weeks in advance will receive a 20 percent discount on the Flex fare. This fare is now also permanently cancellable up to one day before departure.

While specific, quantifiable occupancy rate data for long-distance traffic is not provided, recent discount campaigns are in response to a notable increase in passenger numbers in the first four months of the year. Industry analysts predict that further boosts in convenience and appeal, such as the rollout of new digital ticketing systems across Europe, will entice more travelers. These measures should reduce costs and ease friction for multi-leg or international journeys, ultimately increasing ridership.
