Experience the Powerhouse: Mercedes 300 SEL 6.3 - A Behemoth of Speed and Luxury

From the realm of dream cars comes a number - the "6.3" - that sends shivers down the spines of car fanatics. Even decades later, Mercedes-Benz continues to badge the legendary naturally-aspirated V8 with the M156 or M159 under its hood with that very number. And although there's a ten-liter difference here, Mercedes die-hards know exactly what the displacement quote means. But only in the 1960s did the 300 SEL 6.3 of the W109 series truly blow bystanders away.

In many ways, this top-tier Mercedes predates our modern obsession with high-performance vehicles. The 300 SEL's grandeur embodied the prosperity of post-World War II Germany under Ludwig Erhard, whose economic miracle cemented the W109's standing as a symbol of strength and elegance. Mercedes stuck the 6.3 badge on the flanks of its models proudly, even boasting it in a large format on the right side.

Compared to contemporary models, a 250 PS strong 6.3 in 1968 would have left most opponents in the rear-view mirror on the empty autobahns. And the top model of the era could hardly be hassled by anything less than a two-liter car that managed a meager 170 PS. The 210 PS strong Carrera RS hadn't even been invented yet. Meager Volkswagen Beetles, with 30 or 34 PS under their hoods, were the competition.

These days, the 300 SEL 6.3 has earned cult status. But even a regular W108 or W109 can't be topped in terms of style. In Como, Italy, home of Lake Como, the annual FuoriConcorso and Concorso d’Eleganza events at the Villa d’Este attract the hottest cars in the world. To blend in with this elite crowd, you'll need more than a base model W108 or W109, but a 300 SEL 6.3 in Dark Olive code 291 would do just fine.

Power Under the Hood

Under the hood of the 300 SEL 6.3 beats the massive M100 V8 engine, reminiscent of the Mercedes 600's heart. The car may have been adapted to American taste, where even smaller vehicles without large-displacement eight-cylinder engines were met with skepticism. But on the home turf? The W109 was a foreign body. However, it flourished in the rich soil of the economic miracle.

Getting behind the wheel of the 300 SEL 6.3 is a thrill. Its 60+ year-old engine roars to life without hesitation, with the tachometer needle twitching appreciatively. The gearbox moves smoothly, and the 1.81-meter-wide, five-meter-long S-Class precursor glides effortlessly onto the streets of Como.

Give the Mercedes gas, and it cruises at a steady pace. Unlike modern supercars, the 6.3 exudes class instead of screaming its presence. And even the driver of a million-dollar Lamborghini Miura shows respect and flashes a thumbs-up.

The Long Haul

I'm tasked with the 6.3's return trip to Mercedes-Benz's museum in Stuttgart, a journey of less than 500 kilometers. Like its passengers in the 1960s, I realize that the W109 is surprisingly spacious and offers a comfortable ride, even over long distances. The air-suspension absorbs small bumps and transverse joints woodenly, but long-frequency waves create a soothing "heavy car" sensation.

Cruise control would have been useful in Switzerland, where you risk getting ticketed if you exceed the speed limit by even a kilometer per hour. But 1968's autobahn was a far cry from today's congested highways. On empty stretches, I let the 6.3 stretch its legs, and it proves its mettle, with ample torque to propel the sedan powerfully along.

Though most 300 SEL 6.3s were not built for track days, they managed well on winding roads. The old-school swing-axle handling has its limits, and sharp cornering can be a wild ride. But the Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.3 remains a legend, a symbol of a bygone era, still capable of turning heads today.
