FairPrice Group Unveils Agentic AI for 'Store of Tomorrow'

Singapore's largest retailer, FairPrice Group (FPG), has launched new agentic AI applications as part of an expanded multi-year collaboration with Google Cloud. The purpose, as stated by group chief executive officer Vipul Chawla, is to make every day a little better for their customers. This commitment is evident in the launch of their 'Store of Tomorrow' initiative.

At the heart of this innovation lies Google Cloud's Agent Development Kit (ADK) and the Model Context Protocol (MCP), enabling seamless communication among different AI agents. FPG is adopting Google Agentspace for building, managing, and using AI agents at scale, with plans to develop custom agents for various departments like human resources, customer service, and marketing.

FPG is piloting Vertex AI Search for Commerce to embed this solution into Smart Cart assistants and other customer touchpoints. This handles local context, non-English queries, semantic meaning, and spelling variations to surface relevant results. The smart shopping assistant, demonstrated at FairPrice Finest Punggol Digital District and Sengkang Grand Mall, uses multiple AI agents for speech recognition, query processing, product catalog scanning, and suggesting complementary products. The creative agent has already supported recent campaigns like Price Drop, Buy Now, and Durian Buffet, reducing time and costs for ad creation by 10x and 100x respectively.

FairPrice Group's implementation goes beyond typical chatbot deployments, orchestrating specialized AI agents across customer-facing and enterprise workflows. The enhanced Smart Carts are planned for deployment at FairPrice Finest Thomson Plaza in Q4 2025, along with specialized AI assistants for wellness advice and digital wine sommelier via mobile phones. The National University of Singapore (NUS) also plans to deploy specialized AI assistants at the same location. This comprehensive deployment of agentic AI across retail operations is expected to deliver concrete ROI, further solidifying FPG's commitment to enhancing customer experience.
