India took a significant step towards safeguarding the interests of its farmers by approving the procurement of over 54,000 metric tonnes (MT) of Moong and more than 50,000 MT of groundnut. This move, announced by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare on June 12, 2025, is aimed at ensuring remunerative prices for farmers during the peak harvesting season.
The breakdown of Moong procurement includes 54,166 MT from Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat, while Uttar Pradesh will also be the major supplier of groundnuts with 50,750 MT. The initiative under Price Support Scheme (PSS) aims to reduce India's dependencies on imports and boost domestic production.
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also extended the procurement window by 15 days in Andhra Pradesh, pushing the deadline to June 26, 2025. This decision was taken to promote wider participation in the ongoing procurement drive, benefiting farmers in the region.
The Centre approved the procurement of Tur (Arhar), Urad, and Masur up to 100 percent of state production for 2024-25, extending the policy for another four years till 2028-29. This move signifies the government's commitment to making India self-sufficient in pulse production and promoting crop diversification.
The procurement falls under the umbrella of the Pradhan Mantri Annadata Aay Sanrakshan Abhiyan (PM-AASHA), which includes PSS, Price Deficiency Payment Scheme (PDPS), Market Intervention Scheme (MIS), and the Price Stabilisation Fund (PSF). These schemes guarantee fair prices for farmers and shield them from market fluctuations.
