Federal Funding Recommendations by NHPRC Amount to $5,159,313 Across 54 Grants - Announced on May 30, 2000

Duke University and The Jane Addams Papers have been granted up to $60,170. Similarly, William Marsh Rice University has been awarded up to $80,405 for The Papers of Jefferson Davis. Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey has received a grant of up to $51,493 for The Papers of Thomas Edison. The Regents of the University of California, Los Angeles have been granted up to $58,272 for The Marcus Garvey and the Universal Negro Improvement Association Papers.

The State Historical Society of North Dakota's Fort Buford Documentation Project received a significant boost with a congressional grant of $250,000. The University of Tennessee has been awarded a grant of up to $75,605 for The Papers of Andrew Jackson. Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis has received a grant of up to $18,141 for The Papers of Frederick Douglass.

The California Historical Society, San Francisco, CA, was granted a conditional 30-month grant of up to $60,000 ($19,325 matching) to catalog 550 of its manuscript collections. The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency received a conditional grant of up to $86,649 for The Lincoln Legal Papers: A Documentary History of the Law Practice of Abraham Lincoln, 1836-1861.

The Commission approved resolutions to support State Historical Records Advisory Board administrative expenses, strengthen grant applications from Native American applicants, and pursue additional funding and strategic collaborations. The Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma, Perkins, OK, received a one-year grant of $25,298 to conduct a repository survey to identify records relating to the tribe.

The Center for Jewish History in New York, NY, was awarded $1,800,033 from Congress. Union Theological Seminary, New York, NY, received an 18-month grant of $79,325 to implement further plans for its Archives of Women in Theological Scholarship. A subvention grant of $10,000 was awarded to the University of South Carolina Press for The Papers of John C. Calhoun, Vol. 26.

Concord Free Public Library, Concord, MA, received a two-year grant of $39,275 to improve access to and preservation of the 5,884 images making up the Robbins-Mills Collection of Herbert Wendell Gleason Photographic Negatives (Gleason Collection). The County of Santa Fe, Santa Fe, NM, received a six-month grant of $18,754 to complete the microfilming of historic deed books and indexes.

State University of New York, College at Old Westbury received a conditional grant of up to $55,000 for a documentary edition of the papers of Clarence Mitchell, Jr. The George Washington University received a grant of up to $150,000 for a documentary edition of the papers of Eleanor Roosevelt. The University of South Carolina received a grant of up to $49,149 for The Papers of John C. Calhoun.

Rhode Island Historical Society received a grant of up to $84,190 for The Papers of General Nathanael Greene. Catawba Cultural Preservation Project, Rock Hill, SC, received a six-month grant of $6,430 to hire a consultant to evaluate the Catawba Indian Nation's current records policies and procedures.

University of Arizona received a grant of up to $50,383 for Documentary Relations of the Southwest: Civil/Military. The Institute of Early American History and Culture received a grant of up to $22,909 for The Papers of John Marshall. San Diego Historical Society, San Diego, CA, received a two-year grant of $87,982 to arrange, describe, and selectively rehouse 127 photographic collections.

The College of William and Mary received a grant of $15,000 for The Papers of Charles Carroll of Carrollton. Shelburne Farm Resources, Inc., Shelburne, VT, received a conditional nine-month grant of up to $20,983 to address preservation and access issues relating to its 3,000 original prints and 2,750 nitrate negatives.

The State Historical Society of North Dakota, Bismarck, ND, received a two-year grant of $250,000 to document the historic military post of Fort Buford and, more broadly, the confluence of the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers. Stanford University received a grant of up to $64,146 for The Papers of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Up to $3,100,928 was awarded to 52 competitive applicants. University of Maryland received a grant of $80,000 for The Samuel Gompers Papers. Richard and Shirley Cushing Flint received a conditional grant of $22,974 for a dual-language edition of documents relating to the Coronado Expedition.

State Historical Society of Wisconsin, Madison, WI, received a two-year grant of $103,841 to catalog and rehouse 2,000 photograph collections. University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, La Crosse, WI, received a one-year grant of $48,094 to catalog and create user copies of oral history tapes. Ulysses S. Grant Association received a conditional grant of up to $77,432 for The Papers of Ulysses S. Grant.

The Commission recommended grants of up to $2,248,285 for 34 documentary editing projects. The Johns Hopkins University received a grant of up to $45,287 for The Papers of Dwight David Eisenhower. Northeast Historic Film, Bucksport, ME, received a two-year grant of $120,433 to transfer, describe, and rehouse seven collections of newsfilm and broadcast videotapes.

East Stroudsburg University received a grant of $85,000 for The Papers of the War Department, 1784-1800. Pomona College received a grant of $37,030 for The Letters of Lucretia Coffin Mott. University of Missouri-Columbia, Columbia, MO, received a one-year grant of up to $19,229 to arrange, describe, and make accessible the archaeological investigation papers of Carl H. Chapman.

The American University received a grant of up to $45,819 for The Papers of Frederick Law Olmsted. East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, TN, received a two-year grant of $96,818 to preserve and make more accessible the audio and video recordings in three collections.

University of South Carolina received a grant of $84,511 for The Papers of Henry Laurens. The Society of American Archivists, Chicago, IL, received a two-year grant of $41,580 to support meetings of its Encoded Archival Description (EAD) Working Group. University of Maryland received a grant of $94,917 for Freedom: A Documentary History of Emancipation, 1861-1867.

Baker-Cederberg Museum and Archives, Rochester, NY, received a conditional two-year grant of up to $39,835 to employ a 'circuit archivist' to help participating area institutions strengthen their historical programs. The Center for Jewish History, New York, NY, received a conditional three-year grant of up to $1,800,033 to implement the integration of its partners' collections and services.

The Commission granted The University of Virginia a grant of up to $100,000 for its Presidential Recordings Project. University of North Carolina at Greensboro received a grant of up to $25,464 for Race, Slavery and Free Blacks: Petitions to Southern Legislatures and County Courts, 1776-1867. Morehouse College received a grant of up to $62,937 for The Howard Thurman Papers. George C. Marshall Foundation received a grant of $57,000 for The Papers of George Catlett Marshall.
