Federal mandate abolishes Delta-Aeromexico partnership effective January 1st

In a recent turn of events, the U.S. Transportation Secretary, Sean P. Duffy, has expressed his dissatisfaction with empty promises, following the government's decision to terminate the strategic partnership between Delta Air Lines and Aeromexico on January 1st.

The decision, which has been widely reported by media outlets such as Reuters, La Jornada, CNBC, and USA Today, is expected to cause significant harm to U.S. jobs, communities, and consumers traveling between the U.S. and Mexico.

Delta Air Lines, in a statement, expressed its disappointment with the decision, stating that the pro-competitive partnership between the two airlines has brought numerous benefits to tourism and connectivity. Aeromexico, on the other hand, regrets the decision and asserts that it disregards the benefits the alliance has brought.

Despite the dissolution of the partnership, Aeromexico and Delta have confirmed that they will continue to offer flights on each other's airline. Frequent flyer program reciprocity, allowing customers to earn and burn miles, will also continue between the two airlines.

U.S. Secretary Duffy believes that Mexico needs to take definitive action to level the playing field and restore fairness. Aeromexico's statement, however, confirms that the order does not affect their customers.

This development comes at a time when the airline industry is already struggling due to the ongoing pandemic. The U.S. Secretary of Transportation's call for action underscores the importance of fair competition in the industry, especially in the context of the economic recovery.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the two airlines will navigate this challenge and what implications it may have for the future of air travel between the U.S. and Mexico.
