In the heart of Kazakhstan, Almaty has taken significant strides to improve food security and affordability for its residents. The introduction of "Social shops" in February 2021 has marked a notable increase in the availability of socially significant food products, such as bread, flour, sugar, cooking oil, meat, dairy, and other essential items [1].

These socially significant products can now be found not only in "Social shops" but also in notable marketplaces like the Green Bazaar, a central food marketplace and tourist attraction in Almaty. The Green Bazaar underwent redevelopment in 2017, with a new pavilion created to facilitate trade in agricultural products, likely supporting the distribution of key food products [1].

To further boost the availability of these essential items, agreements have been reached with retail networks like "Toimart" and "Magnum" to increase the number of socially significant food products on offer. For instance, starting January 1, 2021, the "Toimart" retail network will offer 12 positions of socially significant food products, up from 7 [1].

To maintain price stability, measures are being taken to regulate prices, particularly for products with high demand. The expanded product list includes items like sugar, sunflower oil, beef, onions, cabbage, kefir, and more [1]. The number of trade marks for certain positions will also be expanded, such as 5 for sunflower oil, 3 for rice, 2 for eggs, and 4 for chicken meat [1].

In an effort to ensure a steady supply of these products, the city akimat is closely monitoring the situation with prices on socially significant food products. Approximately 9 billion tenge has been allocated to stabilize prices on these items in Almaty [1]. Furthermore, work is underway to purchase 3,300 tons of products for the Almaty Stabilization Fund, which will stockpile 21,000 tons of vegetables for sale during the interseasonal period of 2021-2022 [1].

In a recent meeting chaired by Almaty Akim Bakytzhan Sagintayev, food security issues and price stabilization were discussed. The total volume of products sold at fixed prices is expected to increase to 8,500 tons [1]. Work has begun on concluding "futures" contracts with distributors and producers for a total of 2.5 billion tenge [1].

In summary, Almaty is making concerted efforts to improve food security and affordability for its residents. Through the establishment of "Social shops", infrastructure improvements, and strategic agreements with retail networks, the city is ensuring a wider availability of socially significant food products at affordable prices. The city akimat is also actively monitoring price stability and taking measures to regulate prices, particularly for products with high demand.
