Financial technology company, Revolut, expands its operations by opening a new branch in Portugal.
Revolut Expands to Portugal, Offering Daily Interest Deposit Accounts
Fintech giant Revolut has made its entrance into the Portuguese market, launching a deposit account that offers daily interest. This move is part of the company's broader strategy to expand across Europe by 2025–2028.
Revolut opened its Portuguese branch on July 24, 2021, and currently employs 1,300 people in the country. The company aims to attract customers with its integrated fintech products, such as multi-currency accounts, low fees, and banking services. However, specific details about its expansion plans in Portugal, including timeline, services, and competition positioning within the next three years, are not publicly disclosed.
Revolut's Portuguese customers now have access to Portuguese IBANs, making it easier to access services like direct debits. The company will also be integrated into the Portuguese payment system, allowing it to be present in more moments of the customer's daily life. This integration will enable Revolut to work with Multibanco and MB Way systems.
One feature, such as Multibanco, will only be available after the migration process, which is set to occur gradually over the next few weeks. As for mortgage loans, Revolut currently offers them only in Ireland and Lithuania, evaluating market performance before deciding to expand. The company has no plans to offer mortgage loans in Portugal at this time.
Regarding competition, Revolut typically positions itself as a digital banking alternative, competing against traditional banks and other fintech companies in European countries. While exact competitive positioning in Portugal is not detailed, this model is likely to be similar.
It's worth noting that Revolut does not disclose revenue and net income from its operations in Portugal, nor its investments in the country. The Portuguese Securities Market Commission (CMVM) oversees financial activities, but no direct information was retrieved from the CMVM portal at this time.
Revolut is a 'financial superapp' with over 55 million customers and over 10,000 employees worldwide. In Portugal, the company currently boasts 1.8 million individual customers. The group posted profits of €934 million in 2024, more than double the €395 million in 2023.
As Revolut continues to grow and expand, it's an exciting time for both the company and its customers in Portugal. Stay tuned for more updates as they become available.
