Following disputes: consensus on union contract at Döner manufacturing company Birtat in Murr
In a significant development for the German doner kebab industry, a collective bargaining agreement has been reached at Birtat, one of the country's largest doner kebab skewer manufacturers located in Murr near Ludwigsburg. This agreement marks the first of its kind in the German doner meat industry.
Birtat, part of Meat World SE, produces frozen veal, chicken, and beef skewers that supply thousands of snack bars and kebab stands across Germany, reaching over 13 million consumers monthly. The company has been at the centre of labour tensions due to strike threats, which raised concerns about potential kebab shortages and increased prices.
Under this new agreement, workers will receive a minimum monthly salary of €2,600 and wage increases up to 17% by 2027. The agreement also includes ancillary conditions, providing additional benefits to the employees.
The agreement was reached after twelve hours of negotiations and was announced in a joint press release on Friday. The company agreed to the collective bargaining agreement following the eleventh warning strike and significant pressure from employees.
Cihan Karaman, spokesperson for Meat World SE, expressed appreciation for the hard and good work of the employees with the new agreement. Magdalena Krüger, NGG negotiator, stated that the agreement is a historic result in the doner meat industry and a success for the employees.
The new collective bargaining agreement likely stabilizes labor relations, preventing disruptive strikes that could have led to scarcity and even higher prices for doner kebabs in Germany. This development is significant for workers securing better wages in a critical segment of the German fast-food supply chain, and for consumers and businesses depending on affordable and steady doner kebab availability.
