Foreigners now find it easier to access telecom services as MegaFon and Solidarity Bank streamline the process.

Megafon, a leading mobile operator in Russia, has launched a joint project with Solidarnost Bank to streamline the process of acquiring and activating SIM cards for foreign citizens in the country. The initiative was rolled out in over 40 Megafon-owned stores in Moscow, strategically located near major transport hubs and high-traffic multifunctional centers for government services.

The project, which began in early summer 2023, enables new Megafon subscribers, who are foreign citizens, to complete all necessary procedures for acquiring and activating SIM cards in one place. This integration provides a one-stop location for foreign residents to fulfill legal steps required for SIM card registration and activation, in accordance with local legal requirements.

Foreign citizens are now required to obtain an Individual Taxpayer Number (INN), set up a confirmed account on the Gosuslugi portal, and register biometrics at a bank branch to sign a contract for communication services. However, with the launch of this joint project, these procedures can be carried out directly at Solidarnost bank outlets located within Megafon stores.

To ensure compliance with regulations, the operator verifies the client's data through the Unified Biometric System (UBS) before activating the SIM card. This verification process is carried out by bank employees present in the operator's retail store. Once all data is verified, the SIM card is activated, a process that now takes no more than 30 minutes, compared to several days previously.

Vadim Zimin, Director of Strategy and Sales Development at MegaFon, emphasized the convenience of offering banking products within their salons. He highlighted that this initiative not only simplifies the process for foreign citizens but also provides a seamless experience by integrating banking and telecommunication services under one roof.

Natalia Montaya Ibanez, Director of Development at Solidarnost Bank, expressed confidence in the initiative's potential to grow the business and increase financial accessibility for foreign citizens in the country. She also noted that the project's success could pave the way for further expansion of such collaborations in the future.

In addition to the SIM card activation service, Megafon also started selling SIM cards in MFCs (Megafon-owned stores) in early summer 2023. The operator is also planning to franchise retail outlets of the mobile operator as part of the project's second phase, aiming to make these services more widely available across Moscow and potentially other cities in Russia.

This joint project between Megafon and Solidarnost not only simplifies the process for foreign citizens to acquire and activate SIM cards in Russia but also demonstrates the commitment of both companies to improving the overall experience for their customers. The project will be closely monitored, with Megafon and Solidarnost set to analyze its performance to decide on its expansion in Moscow and potentially other cities in Russia.

The joint project between Megafon and Solidarnost Bank, aimed at streamlining the process of acquiring and activating SIM cards for foreign citizens in Russia, has integrated banking services within their stores. As a result, foreign residents can now complete necessary legal steps for SIM card registration and activation, as well as obtain banking products, all in one location.

The integration of banking and telecommunication services under one roof, as emphasized by Vadim Zimin, Director of Strategy and Sales Development at MegaFon, not only simplifies the process for foreign citizens but also has potential to grow the business, increasing financial accessibility for them in the country.
