Gab Offers Support to Ghana's Police Force
Ina groundbreaking move, the Ghana Association of Bankers (GAB) stepped up to safeguard our protectors by donating a whopping 1,000 bullet-proof vests and 1,000 ballistic helmets to the Ghana Police Service (GPS).
This generous gift, requested by former Inspector General of Police Mr. James Oppong-Boanuh, aims to bolster the protective arsenal of officers, particularly those on bank duty, in response to recent attacks on law enforcement.
During the presentation ceremony at the Ghana Police Service Headquarters in Accra, the CEO of GAB, Mr John Awuah, highlighted that the donated protective items are intended to bolster the inventory of such equipment, ensuring there's enough equipment for officers on duty.
"Today, we're drawing attention to the importance of police protection; our presence ensures security, but we've observed that our protectors aren't always adequately safeguarded. These bullet-proof vests and ballistic helmets will help reduce this risk," he stated.
However, Mr. Awuah acknowledged that the donations cannot entirely eliminate the risk of grave injury during an attack, but they will significantly decrease it.
GAB is also making strides to comply with the government's directive on the use of armored vehicles for cash operations in the country. Collaborating with banks, the IGP's office, the police service, Bank of Ghana, Ministry of Interior, and National Security Ministry, GAB aims to procure the right armored vehicles for cash operations.
Mr. Awuah also encouraged the public to mitigate robbery risks by minimizing cash withdrawals and leveraging digital payment systems, such as mobile money and electronic cash transfers, instead.
Receiving the donation, the Director General in Charge of National Protection Directorate of the GPS, Mr. Patrick Atampugre Akolgo, commended GAB for their support. He noted that body-armor and shield helmets are essential protective gear for officers in the current crime landscape.
"The body-armor and steel helmets will greatly enhance officer safety," he affirmed. Crimes are increasingly sophisticated, but with collaborative support like this, he believes that crime can be significantly reduced, making Ghana a safer country to live in.
