Shove'em up against the ropes, that's what Jochen Wilhelm, CEO of Tankstelle Verband (TV), wants the federal government, EU Commission, and Cartel Office to do—against the big, snarling corporations that use their market muscle to exploit consumers and franchisees alike. "Prices are [fluctuating] like mad and not making sense," Wilhelm said angrily during a press conference in Berlin.
According to the association, which boasts some 700 members operating roughly 1,000 gas stations, mostly franchisees, it's high time fuel and shop businesses at gas stations became political hot potatoes. These industries, Wilhelm argued, give corporations the perfect opportunity to ruthlessly exploit their power. "Prices change like raindrops falling from the sky" is how he describes the confusing, irritating prices consumers are hit with day after day. The association claims that gas station prices have long since abandoned any semblance of connection to the oil price on the world market.
An investigation by the price comparison portal benzinear.de sheds a stark light on the matter: during a seven-day period from May 12 to May 18, over 11,000 gas stations reported prices that were valid for less than 15 minutes. In 3,851 cases, the portal even caught prices that lasted mere five minutes! "Franchisees and drivers alike are kicked in the guts by the price jumps of the mineral oil companies," TV stated with indignation.
We reached out to benzinear.de for further comment, and they confirmed the validity of their findings. "It's a deliberate tactic by the big corporations to keep consumers guessing and make them feel powerless," they explained.
So, what's a consumer to do? Well, according to Wilhelm, you should keep demanding fairer pricing practices and put pressure on the government and relevant authorities to step in and stop this monstrous game of hardball. After all, who'd want to fill up their tank but be left high and dry at the checkout?

Under the Hood
- Super Fuel: Germany's gas station offerings mainly consist of Super E5, though Super E10, which contains up to ten percent biofuel, is gaining traction.
- Regulatory Framework: The pricing of fuel is impacted by market fluctuations, as well as taxes and duties. The EU's energy policies can have a ripple effect on fuel pricing through regulations on biofuels and emissions standards.
- Tankstelle Verband's Criticism: While specific criticism from Tankstelle Verband is not outlined, the challenges faced by fuel station operators—including tight profit margins, competition, and regulatory compliance—could be at the root of their criticisms.
- Government Actions: The German government has been emphasizing sustainability, such as promoting the growth of biofuels like Super E10. This could potentially lead to changes in fuel regulations to encourage more eco-friendly options.
- EU Commission and Cartel Office Actions: The EU Commission and the German Cartel Office keep a close watch on anti-competitive practices. If there are concerns over collusion or unscrupulous market practices in the fuel industry, these organizations may investigate and take action.
The Tankstelle Verband urges the government, EU Commission, and Cartel Office to take action against corporations, advocating for a review of community policy to address the issue of irregular pricing in the fuel and shop businesses at gas stations, which are considered lucrative industries ripe for exploitation. Finance and business leaders should be closely monitoring general-news reports for updates on this matter to assess its potential impact on their vocational training programs and the broader industrial sector.
