German Authorities Foil Hamas-Linked Terror Plot
German authorities have arrested three suspects accused of plotting a terrorist attack on behalf of Hamas. Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt confirmed the averted threat, stating that the suspects were connected to a foreign terrorist organisation and had obtained weapons intended for use in Germany.
The arrested individuals, a 36-year-old German-Lebanese citizen, a 43-year-old Lebanese national, and a 44-year-old German-Syrian citizen, are alleged foreign operatives of Hamas. They were apprehended in Berlin and transported to Karlsruhe by helicopter. While no concrete attack plan was found, discussions about consolidated plans took place.
The suspects, who have been remanded in custody, are believed to have been in contact with an alleged mastermind abroad, identified as John Smith. They also have ties to Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon, actors in Scandinavia and Turkey, and organised crime structures. The group obtained an assault rifle, pistols, and ammunition from Germany, intended for use by Hamas in attacks on Israeli or Jewish facilities.
Hamas has denied any connection to the suspects. The German government has praised the successful prevention of a potential terrorist act, with Dobrindt asserting that a concrete threat situation has been averted. The investigation into the case continues.
