In a significant change of leadership, Andreas Wenzel, a renowned figure in European evangelical circles, has been appointed as the new president of the European Evangelical Alliance (EEA). Wenzel, a German national, succeeds Frank Hinkelmann, an Austrian who is stepping down after 12 years at the helm.

The handover of the EEA presidency took place during the EEA's 2025 members meeting in Montenegro. This hybrid event, which brought together the EEA Board and staff on-site, as well as evangelical leaders from across Europe virtually, proved to be a memorable occasion.

Jan Wessels, co-general secretary of the EEA, expressed his gratitude for Hinkelmann's service, stating that it had been a blessing, guiding them through challenges with grace and vision. Wessels drew inspiration from Hebrews 12:1, honoring Hinkelmann's endurance and expressing excitement for Wenzel's fresh energy rooted in Scripture.

Connie Main Duarte, the other co-general secretary, also voiced her appreciation for Hinkelmann, thanking him for his 12 years of unwavering dedication and godly wisdom. Main Duarte quoted Philippians 1:6, stating that Hinkelmann's leadership had been a testament to God's faithfulness in building unity among evangelicals.

Hinkelmann's tenure as EEA chair was marked by a commitment to theological education, deepening the understanding of the history of Evangelicalism, and amplifying the evangelical voice in a diverse continent.

Wenzel, currently the director of Word of Life Europe and a member of the German Evangelical Alliance board, is well-equipped to continue this legacy. The new president expressed his eagerness to build on the foundation laid by Hinkelmann, focusing on fostering evangelical unity, advocating for religious freedom, and addressing key socio-political issues across the continents.

The EEA representatives in Montenegro also had a meaningful gathering with local pastors to discuss unity, mission, and support for the growing evangelical community in the country.

However, the EEA is currently facing a sustainability challenge. Evangelical Focus, the organisation's media platform, is encouraging those committed to their mission to join them in the #TogetherInThisMission initiative. More information about this initiative can be found on the Evangelical Focus website.

As the EEA moves forward under the leadership of Andreas Wenzel, it continues to strive towards its goal of representing 23 million evangelical Christians in Europe and making a positive impact on the continent.
