No broadcasting fee from October: These people can be exempted - German Students to Pay €18.36 Broadcasting Fee from October
Starting October, German students will join the list of those liable to pay the monthly broadcasting fee of €18.36. However, several groups remain exempt or can apply for reductions, including disabled individuals and those facing financial hardship.
The broadcasting fee, the primary income source for ARD, ZDF, and Deutschlandradio, is mandatory for all apartments regardless of device or occupant count. Exemptions and reductions apply under specific conditions.
Blind or severely visually impaired individuals, deaf-blind people, and those with special needs are fully exempt. Those with a severe disability of at least 80% or unable to participate in public events can apply for a reduced fee of approximately €5.83. Other eligible groups include those receiving social benefits like unemployment or basic old-age security, and those living with a partner or in shared accommodation where another resident already pays the fee. Significant financial hardship also qualifies for exemption or reduction.
Applications for exemption or reduction can be made online at www.rundfunkbeitrag.de and must be sent by post. The exemption starts on the first day of the month in which the conditions are met, provided the application is submitted within three months.
The broadcasting fee's expansion to students and the ongoing exemptions and reductions ensure a balanced funding system for Germany's public broadcasters. Those eligible should apply promptly to avoid unnecessary payments.
