Germany: Savings Banks Ponder Future Strategies

It's all systems go for the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe's two-day extravaganza in Nuremberg! Participants from across Germany, including local representatives, board members, and administrative councils of Sparkassen, Landesbanken, and affiliated companies, are gathering to pitch their political suggestions to the new federal government and discuss a far-reaching modernization program for Germany. Dubbed "Creating the Future," this event is more necessary than ever this year!

Timing couldn't be better, right after the new federal government assumes office. The 28th German Sparkassen Day, taking place in Nuremberg this year, aims to revitalize economic vibrancy in Germany and bolster resilience and competitiveness across the entire EU.

As always, the top officials of the federal government, from the Chancellor to the Finance Minister, have been cordially invited. This time around, they'll be encouraged to kick off a complete overhaul of the state with the "Nuremberg Impulses."

So, how do we get this show on the road?

The primary objective for the Sparkassen-Finanzgruppe this year is likely to be easing up on citizens and businesses from red tape and regulations to create a new wave of optimism sweeping across the country. The Sparkassen believe in the EU's strength, which stems from its cultural, economic, and financial structural diversity. Ulrich Reuter, the President of the German Sparkassen and Giroverband (DSGV), is expected to articulate this in Nuremberg, along with outlining additional contributions that citizens, businesses, and especially Sparkassen can make to propel Germany forward.

In the face of geopolitical crises, the antics of the Trump administration, a relatively young EU Commission, and a new government in Berlin, the curiosity surrounding the Sparkassen Day has never been hotter. The event on the exhibition grounds is completely sold out.

Broad views from outside the boxFor its political positioning, the Sparkassen group looks to perspectives that extend beyond one's own horizon and expertise: Former Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer, US-Polish historian Anne Applebaum, "futurist" Christina von Messling, and Belarusian writer Alhierd Bacharevič, who received the Leipzig Book Prize in 2025, are among those invited to share their insights.

The meeting in Nuremberg resumes the typical three-year cycle for the German Sparkassen Day. The last Sparkassen Day in Hannover was postponed from 2022 to 2023 due to the Russian attack on Ukraine.

The event in Nuremberg concentrates on three main areas: economic modernization, EU competitiveness, and geopolitical impacts on the financial sector. The modernization drive involves exploring innovative digital transformations within the Sparkassen sector, with a focus on blending technological advancements with human skills in the workforce. The discussion on EU competitiveness seeks to strengthen the EU’s financial and economic position globally by examining regulatory frameworks, capital flow optimization, and fostering innovation environments within member states. Lastly, the agenda covers how geopolitical developments affect the banking industry, addressing the need for resilience and adaptability in an ever-changing global political landscape.

Don't miss out on this incredible opportunity to shape Germany's future — see you in Nuremberg!
