Germany Seizes 4 Tons of Untaxed Coffee, Arrests Official
Customs officials in Germany have made a significant seizure of untaxed coffee, resulting in a substantial tax loss. On September 16, 2025, nearly four tons of untaxed coffee were confiscated by the Main Customs Office Cologne.
The seizure included a substantial amount of both soluble and roasted coffee - around 245 kilograms and over 176 kilograms respectively. The tax evasion is estimated to total over 17,000 euros, based on the coffee tax rates of 2.19 euros per kilogram of roasted coffee and 4.78 euros per kilogram of soluble coffee.
The operation led to the arrest of a 36-year-old German official, though the company he is associated with remains unidentified. Evidence suggests that another three tons of untaxed coffee were imported from the Netherlands recently. Simultaneous checks in Limburg an der Lahn and Giessen resulted in an additional three and a half tons of untaxed coffee being seized.
This seizure is a significant blow to tax evaders, coming just ahead of National Coffee Day on October 1st. Nationwide, the customs office collected around one billion euros in coffee tax in 2024. It serves as a reminder that while small personal imports from the EU are tax-exempt, commercial tax evasion will not be tolerated.
