Germany's Broadcasting Fee Goes Digital: Here's What You Need to Know

In Germany, the broadcasting fee has gone digital. Residents can now submit important applications and notifications related to the fee online. The legally regulated monthly fee per e, regardless of the number of devices present.

The consumer center advises using the official website of the contribution service for online submissions to avoid scams. In shared apartments, only one resident is responsible for paying the fee, but all tenants are jointly liable for the rent and additional costs according to the rental contract.

When moving into a shared apartments where someone already pays the fee, the new resident can specify the existing contribution number. However, exemption from the fee applies only to the spouse or registered partner, not to roommates. Those receiving BAföG or training allowance may apply for exemption from the contribution obligation. The contribution number is personal and moves with the payer if they leave the shared apartments.

The broadcasting fee in Germany can be managed online, with one resident responsible for payment in shared apartments.
