Germany's First Fully Climate-Neutral Natural Swimming Pool Opens in Winsen

The first fully climate-neutral natural swimming pool in Germany and Europe has opened in Winsen (Luhe), Lower Saxony. The innovative climate change mitigation facility, which was the result of a citizen participation process that began in 2017, aims to balance its carbon footprint through green electricity and modern technology.

The swimming pool, which opened on May 2, 2025, after a one-year delay from the final project decision in 2020, is a testament to Winsen's commitment to global warming reduction. Unlike conventional outdoor pools, it does not use chlorine for cleaning. Instead, it employs biological and mechanical processes in planted substrate filters, making it more environmentally friendly.

The pool's construction also considered the environment. It uses resource-saving techniques and environmentally friendly materials to reduce emissions. Moreover, it produces more electricity than it consumes, thanks to a 66 kilowatt-peak (kWp) photovoltaic system. This, along with its efficient design, helps it save more than 130 tons of CO2 per year compared to a conventional outdoor pool.

The gastronomy at the natural swimming pool follows a sustainable concept. It focuses on regional and seasonal ingredients and avoids plastic packaging. Additionally, the pool promotes biodiversity through natural shorelines, native plant species, and protective measures for local wildlife.

The natural swimming pool in Winsen is not just a place for recreation but also a symbol of the town's dedication to climate change protection. Funded by the federal government's 'Adaptation of Cities to Climate Change' program, it is a shining example of how municipal resilience to global warming can be strengthened. With its innovative design and sustainable practices, it sets a new standard for outdoor swimming facilities.
