Gigantic turbine generators featuring high-speed Mach 2 blades set for installation at Czech nuclear power plant
Doosan Škoda Power Secures Deal for Temelín Nuclear Power Plant Modernization
The Temelín Nuclear Power Plant in Czechia is undergoing a significant modernization project, marking the largest investment and modernization project in the history of Czech nuclear operations. This ambitious project will see the replacement of the plant's aging generators, a move necessitated by their approaching operational lifetime's end.
The company responsible for the delivery of the new generators is Doosan Škoda Power, a Plzeň-based steam turbines manufacturer. The new turbine-generator sets, unique on a European scale, weigh over 2,000 tons and are approximately 213 feet (65 meters) long, including the generator. They are among Europe's largest and most powerful, featuring blade tip speeds that exceed twice the speed of sound.
Doosan Škoda Power secured the deal after the operator launched an open tender in 2023 for their replacement, marking the largest procurement since the commissioning of Czechia's nuclear fleet. The new generators, once installed, will be linked to one high-pressure and three low-pressure turbine sections.
The upgrade will take place during planned outages in 2029 and 2030. The new generators, with a 15-year service commitment, are expected to help the plant continue to deliver its current output of 1,086 megawatts (MW) of electricity to the Czech grid. Since the commissioning of the nuclear units, CZE Group has managed to increase their output by a total of 500 MWe.
Seungwoo Sohn, CEO of the power service business group of Doosan Enerbility, stated that they are building on their long-standing cooperation in turbine delivery and service support for Temelín. This modernization project is a testament to the trusted partnership between the two entities.
The modernization project at the Temelín Nuclear Power Plant is a significant step forward in ensuring the plant's continued operation and contribution to the Czech energy grid. The new generators, once installed, will play a crucial role in maintaining the plant's output and ensuring the reliability of the Czech energy supply.
