Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation (GMDC), one of India's largest lignite producers, has released its financial results for the first quarter of the current financial year (FY25-26). Despite a 10.4% year-on-year (y-o-y) decline in revenue from operations to ₹733 crore, the corporation has managed to deliver a steady performance.

The decline in revenue was primarily due to a 32% fall in power operations revenue, which stood at ₹47 crore for the first quarter, and a 11% decrease in mining revenue, amounting to ₹685 crore. However, GMDC's focus on cost efficiency, operational discipline, and timely execution of key projects has ensured strong margins and healthy profitability. The corporation's consolidated profit after tax for the first quarter was ₹164 crore, a decrease of 11% y-o-y.

Roopwant Singh, IAS, the Managing Director of GMDC, stated, "Despite the challenges, we have maintained our focus on long-term value creation and supporting the nation's energy and mineral needs."

In terms of production, GMDC produced 8.1 million tonnes per annum of lignite during FY25. The corporation is aiming to operationalize six new lignite mines during the current financial year to increase its production capacity.

GMDC's coal mining presence in Angul, Odisha, through the Baitarani West Opencast Coal Mine, is in pre-operational development. The project, a joint venture involving Gujarat Power Corporation Limited (GPCL) and other entities, has geological reserves of 602 million tonnes and mineable reserves of 468 million tonnes. The mining plan was approved in 2009, and environmental clearances are in progress with draft EIA/EMP under preparation as of mid-2025. Administrative approvals from the Odisha government are awaited for land acquisition and lease renewal. Consultants are engaged for business modeling and mining operations. GMDC has contributed financially and administratively to enable the project to attain approvals and operational readiness for mining in Angul.

The Baitarani West Opencast Coal Mine is one of the three coal blocks that GMDC has in Odisha. The corporation aims to produce one metric tonne of coal from this mine during the current financial year.

Separately, NLC India Limited (NLCIL) has successfully bid for the Machhakata coal mine in Angul district, with a large capacity (30 MTPA), indicating competitive coal mining interest and capacity expansion in the region. This is distinct from GMDC but relevant for overall coal mining dynamics in Angul.

The statement was filed with the exchanges by GMDC on July 25, 2025. Currently, GMDC operates four lignite mines, and the lignite produced by the corporation is used as fuel by several industries and power plants.

GMDC continues to work towards expanding its operations and supporting the nation's energy and mineral needs. The ground-breaking of the Baitarani West Opencast Coal Mine in Angul district of Odisha is planned to take place during the current financial year.
