Accelerated Network Expansion Planned in Germany

Berlin, Germany - The federal government has submitted a bill to the Bundestag to significantly speed up the expansion of fiber optic and mobile networks across the country. If passed, network expansion projects could receive priority in approval procedures, allowing them to progress more quickly.

The proposed legislation seeks to amend the Telecommunications Act, stating that the expansion of telecommunications networks in Germany is in the "overriding public interest." This designation would make network expansion a priority over interests such as nature conservation, streamlining the planning and implementation phases of related projects.

Digital Minister, Karsten Wildberger, emphasized the importance of these efforts, stating, "The digitalization of our country is a key topic." The coalition of Union and SPD is implementing a project from their coalition agreement, which included a commitment to swiftly pass an acceleration law defining the expansion of mobile and fiber optic networks as an overriding public interest.

The legislation aims to define the network expansion status until the end of 2030. This move is part of broader efforts to strengthen the legal status of telecommunications networks, easing the way for new infrastructure projects. The changes are expected to expedite planning, particularly in areas where environmental concerns might otherwise delay progress.

The community policy, in alignment with the digitalization of Germany, may include provisions for prioritizing vocational training in the fields of telecommunications, technology, and possibly business finance, to meet the increasing demand for skilled labor in the expansion and maintenance of fiber optic and mobile networks. Following the passage of the bill in the Bundestag, this vocational training can be integrated into the accelerated network expansion projects, ensuring a smooth progression of work.
