Government of Canada funds flexible, readily available public transportation in Grey and Bruce counties
In a significant move towards improving transportation accessibility in Bruce and Grey counties, Ontario, the Government of Canada has announced a substantial investment in Saugeen Mobility and Regional Transit (SMART). This funding, totalling C$1,437,224 (US$1,039,537), will enable SMART to expand its fleet and adopt advanced booking technologies, enhancing the inclusivity and effectiveness of public transit in these rural counties.
As a nonprofit organisation, SMART has been providing day-to-day transportation for residents with disabilities, helping them access essential services, employment, education, medical appointments, and social connections. The investment from the government of Canada, through the Rural Transit Solutions Fund (RTSF), will now allow SMART to purchase four accessible vans, eight accessible cars, and booking software to improve and expand its on-demand transit service.
Minister Gregor Robertson stated that the investment is about accessibility, opportunity, and connectivity. This investment aligns with Canada's climate plan by promoting clean, affordable, and accessible transportation options in rural areas. The RTSF particularly focuses on benefiting rural, remote, Indigenous, and northern communities, with at least 10% of funding dedicated to Indigenous projects.
In addition to expanding its fleet, SMART is also partnering with Home and Community Support Services of Grey and Bruce to complete a feasibility study. This study aims to explore more efficient transit software systems to support better service delivery by SMART. The new client notification system being implemented by SMART is also expected to improve the overall experience for its users.
By renewing 70 percent of its aging fleet, SMART is significantly improving the safety and reliability of its service. The investment from the government of Canada is intended to help meet the demands of the growing region for decades to come. Stephan Labelle, SMART General Manager, mentioned that the investment has been transformative for SMART, enabling them to expand their transit options and provide a more accessible and efficient service for the community.
