Grid expansion will be connected to the incorporation of renewable energy sources
The European Union is making strides in the electrification of the automotive sector, with Apostolos Tzitzikostas, the EU Commissioner for Transport, spearheading the 'Clean Transport Corridor' project. This ambitious initiative aims to expand electric truck charging infrastructure across Europe.
In a separate development, the discussion about the energy transition and expansion of the national grid is gaining momentum in Germany. Oliver Zipse, CEO of BMW, has raised concerns about the potential overloading of the national grid if only electric vehicles are produced from 2035 onwards. He fears that Germany may not be able to power every new car with electricity in ten years.
Zipse's concerns are echoed by Holger Loesch, the deputy head of the BDI, who emphasises the need for energy transition planning to be more aligned with real demand and cost developments. They argue that at least 30 to 40 years are needed to equip the German national grid for a 100 percent electric car share.
Meanwhile, Katherina Reiche (CDU) has received support from the BDI. However, there is no public record of Apostolos Tzitzikostas personally criticizing Germany's government policy in recent weeks.
The debate surrounding the energy transition and national grid expansion is a complex one, with both the EU and German industries voicing their concerns and suggestions for a sustainable future. As the world moves towards electrification, finding a balance between environmental goals and practical considerations will be key.
