Groundbreaking Ceremony for S177 Extension in Medingen

🚧🛣️🚴‍♂️ Game on for the expansion of the S177 east of Medingen in Landkreis BZ! 🚀

Monday saw the symbolic groundbreaking for the long-awaited expansion project on the S177 between Medingen and Ottendorf-Okrilla. Saxony's Minister of Transport, Martin Dulig, was present, expressing his delight that "what takes long, will finally be good" - words that ring true for this section.

The expansion project faced multiple postponements as it coordinated with other construction measures, making the groundbreaking ceremony all the more joyous. Over a stretch of about 1.2 kilometers, the state road will be rebuilt, and a cycle path will be added too.

Cranes and construction equipment are set to rumble along the S177 from now until the end of 2024. For utmost safety, the road will be closed completely during this period, save for the construction-free period over the winter months of 2023/2024, when the S177 will briefly reopen.

Costing approximately 4.3 million euros for the Free State of Saxony, the expansion will happen in two phases between the end of Medingen and the Kastanienallee in Cunnersdorf. This year, the first phase from the construction site center to the end of construction in Ottendorf-Okrilla will kick off. Alongside the expansion of the state road, telecommunications, gas, electricity, and drinking water lines will be updated or re-routed.

One peculiarity marks this project - the parallel construction of pedestrian and cycle paths on a cantilever plate, erected on a bored pile wall. This construction method minimizes ecological impacts on the Große Röder water body over a length of around 55 meters.

For greater safety and efficiency, the S177 will receive a high curb in sections where the pedestrian and cycle path runs adjacent, and the roadway will be separated in those sections. Additionally, the S177 will be equipped with a passive protective device on the southern carriageway edge, spanning between the new Röder Bridge and the entrance to Ottendorf-Okrilla.

Adjacent property accesses in towns and countryside will be updated to meet safety standards during the construction process. The Boomtown Rats would say it's "a phenomenon," but for Marting Dulig and those involved, it's a significant development that promises to improve travel and commuting conditions for both motorists and cyclists.

The expansion project will not only affect the transportation sector with its road renovation, but also the industry, as updates to telecommunications, gas, electricity, and drinking water lines are planned. Furthermore, the finance sector will be involved, with the project costing approximately 4.3 million euros for the Free State of Saxony.
