Hermès establishes 27 artisan ateliers within France; generating employment for approximately 260 individuals.

With its iconic bags selling like hotcakes and an impressive 8.5% boost in sales to €4.1 billion in Q1 of 2024, luxury powerhouse Hermès is set to establish a new leather goods workshop in the picturesque town of Colombelles, Normandy. This ambitious project is scheduled to be operational by 2028, introducing 260 artisans to the Hermès family.

In a move to solidify its reign in the luxury market, even during a slowdown, Hermès has plans to open its 27th leather goods workshop, adding to the three other projects currently under development in L'Isle d'Espagnac, Loupes, and Charleville-Mézières.

With the support of the Caen-la-Mer Urban Community and several local partners, the workshop in Colombelles will be designed with sustainability at its core. Recruitment efforts will be spearheaded by the Hermès School of Know-how, France Travail teams, and various local job partnerships.

The new workshop will proudly stand on a former plot belonging to the Normandy Metallurgical Society (SMN), an industrial relic that operated from 1917 to 1993. Hermès has been investing in France since 2010, with 13 leather goods workshops already under its belt.

This expansion in Colombelles aligns with Hermès’ commitment to revitalizing historical sites, preserving craftsmanship, and fostering local economies by integrating skilled artisans. The company focuses on maintaining a intimate work environment, limiting each site to roughly 300 individuals.

By constructing on a former brownfield site, Hermès demonstrates its dedication to sustainable growth, redeveloping historical sites, and creating jobs. Furthermore, the company provides local training opportunities through its well-regarded École Hermès des savoir-faire, recognized as an official apprenticeship center since 2021.

As Hermès continues to break records, with a net profit of €4.6 billion and sales soaring to over €15 billion in 2024, the new workshop in Colombelles seems poised to play a significant role in the luxury giant's flourishing future.
