Hamburg-based Company HHLA Increases Presence in Ukraine with Terminal Acquisition

HHLA, a multinational company known for container handling and transport, has made its mark in Ukraine by acquiring a majority stake in the Eurobridge Intermodal Terminal in Batjowo. This acquisition, part of a joint venture with Fortior Capital, is undergoing approval by Ukrainian antitrust authorities.

The acquisition beefs up HHLA's presence in Ukraine, a vibrant country for intermodal freight transport. With over 20 years of experience in the region, HHLA already operates assets such as the Black Sea port of Odessa.

The terminal, initially focused on bulk cargo, will be transformed into a hub for international container transport—a strategy that aligns with HHLA's rail subsidiary Metrans' growth ambitions in intermodal logistics. This move aims to create a logistics corridor between the EU and Ukraine, aiding economic integration and strengthening trade connections, especially during tumultuous times.

Because of its strategic location on the border with Slovakia and Hungary, the terminal stands as a crucial junction along global railway corridors, potentially becoming a significant hub for logistics operations in the future. By the end of the year, container handling operations are expected to kick off, with further expansion feasible based on demand.

This considerable investment in Ukraine's logistics infrastructure by HHLA signals an aim to increase operational efficiency and connectivity within European rail freight.
