Former Prime Minister David Cameron in Talks with Law Firm DLA Piper

Former British Prime Minister Lord David Cameron is engaged in active discussions with global law firm DLA Piper regarding a potential role, according to reports from the Financial Times. The position, if secured, would likely see Cameron advising on geopolitical risks, benefiting from his extensive experience in high-level political positions.

The US-UK law firm, known as the largest in the UK by revenue, surpassed £3bn and $4.2bn globally during the 2024 financial year. DLA Piper's government affairs practice group boasts several politically seasoned associates, including Labour's Lord David Blunkett and former US Senator Richard Burr.

David Cameron served as the Prime Minister of the UK from 2010 to 2016, leading the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition. In the years following his departure from front-line politics, Cameron was embroiled in controversy surrounding his connection to British financial firm Greensill Capital, which collapsed in 2021. He has faced allegations of receiving $10m from Greensill Capital, but rejected this claim in January 2024 without disclosing his exact compensation. In 2021, Cameron also stepped down as chairman of the advisory board at software company Afiniti amid sexual harassment and assault allegations against its founder.

DLA Piper has yet to confirm Cameron's appointment, but the Financial Times reports that discussions are underway. In March, Cameron was reported to be joining Jeb Bush's private equity firm Finback Investment Partners in a part-time advisory role, and he was elevated to the House of Lords as a life peer by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in November 2023.

As a former Prime Minister, Cameron would need approval from a government advisory body to formally take on the role at DLA Piper due to rules regarding the use of privileged information by former government officials.

The potential appointment of former Prime Minister David Cameron at DLA Piper, a leading law firm, would involve him advising on geopolitical risks, intertwining politics and finance in his new role. This move follows his controversies in the realm of business and general-news, including alleged connections to Greensill Capital and sexual harassment claims.
