Honda Faces Investigation Over Engine Failures in Over 1.4 Million Vehicles

The U.S. auto safety agency, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), has opened another investigation to further evaluate potential issues in Honda and Acura vehicles. This investigation follows receipt of 414 reports of engine failure by the NHTSA, and it is a continuation of the concerns about connecting rod bearing failures in Honda engines.

The new investigation is not limited to the Honda and Acura vehicles equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 engine, as the previous investigation was. It may cover additional models not previously included in the investigation or recall. The affected models include the Acura TLX, MDX, Honda Pilot, Honda Odyssey, and Honda Ridgeline.

The recall, issued due to a possible manufacturing defect in the engine crankshaft, was triggered by the potential for the connecting rod bearing to prematurely wear and seize, leading to engine failure. This issue poses a potential safety risk, according to NHTSA.

The new investigation involves Honda and Acura vehicles equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 engine, and covers models from 2016 to 2020. The investigation aims to thoroughly evaluate the scope and severity of the potential issue.

The investigation is a continuation of a probe initiated by the agency in 2024, following a recall of 249,000 Honda vehicles in November 2023. The new investigation is being conducted to ensure the safety of Honda and Acura vehicle owners.

It is important to note that the new investigation does not necessarily mean a new recall will be issued. However, it is being conducted to fully understand the issue and its implications. The investigation is intended to fully assess related safety concerns following the closure of the previous probe.

The affected automaker involved in the renewed NHTSA investigation is Honda, due to concerns that malfunctions of the connecting rod bearings in the engines could lead to complete engine failure. The investigation specifically concerns Honda vehicles in the United States. No other automakers or dealers were mentioned as affected by this particular investigation.

The investigation is a response to the high volume of engine failure reports in vehicles not covered by the previous investigation. The NHTSA encourages affected vehicle owners to report any issues directly to the agency or to Honda.

This investigation underscores the importance of regular vehicle maintenance and prompt reporting of any issues to the appropriate authorities. The NHTSA will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as more information becomes available.
