Increase in Belarusian goods via Astrahan port to see a substantial rise
Boosting Belarusian Trade: A Look at Astrakhan's Port Expansion
In a recent meeting, Igor Babushkin, Governor of Russia's Astrakhan region, announced plans to increase the volume of Belarusian goods transshipped through their ports. The current capacity of Astrakhan's ports stands at a staggering 16 million tons per year[1].
The modernized port infrastructure of the region is now equipped to handle the transit of Belarusian commodities, such as timber, paper, machinery, and fertilizers, to destinations like Southeast Asia and the Persian Gulf[1][4].
Babushkin emphasized the region's readiness to significantly boost cargo transshipment. Discussions are underway within a joint working group to clarify conditions for this increase[2]. The region's infrastructure improvements, including the deepening of the Volgo-Caspian Canal to 4.5-meter depths[1], have already led to a record 6 million tons of cargo passing through Astrakhan in 2024[2].
The strategic alliance between Astrakhan and Belarus, initiated by a 2021 agreement, has not only increased trade turnover but also fostered collaboration in numerous sectors[2]. In 2024, 240,000 tonnes of Belarusian rail freight transited through Astrakhan's ports, with 60,000 tonnes moved in January-April 2025 alone[3].
The future looks promising, as both parties are aiming to scale cargo transshipment volumes using Astrakhan's underutilized port capacity[1], introduce new cargo categories[4], and synchronize logistics through Belarus' rail network and Astrakhan's maritime routes[1][3].
These efforts are part of broader plans by Russia and Belarus to bypass Western sanctions through alternative trade corridors[1][4]. With modernized facilities and a strategic partnership in place, we can expect even more growth in Belarusian cargo transshipment through Astrakhan in the coming years.
