Splash Down on a Costlier Shore: Swimming Pool Prices Soaring Above Inflation

Sweltering summer temperatures mean one thing: swimming pools calling our names, but at a heftier price tag this year, stats reveal. According to the Federal Statistical Office, swimming pool admission shot up by a whopping 5.7% in May 2025, compared to May 2024.

Under the blazing sun, eager swimmers now pay a pretty penny more at the entrance. If you thought the rising consumer prices (2.1%) would keep the swimming pool bills in check, think again. Men's swimwear saw a minor increase of 0.6%, while women's sports or swimwear dropped by 1.1%, presenting a mixed bag in the accessories market.

Ten-Minute Token for a Natural or Swimming Pool Dip

Take a dip in your favorite natural or swimming pool – odds are you'll arrive within ten minutes, statisticians claim. However, brace yourself if you're in sparsely populated regions, such as Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Brandenburg, northern Saxony-Anhalt, and parts of Rhineland-Palatinate, where a fifteen-minute drive might be required for the nearest pool.

Germany boasts over 2,800 outdoor pool facilities and more than 570 natural pools, thanks to the German Association for Bathing Facilities.

Training Up: More Lifeguards Learning the Ropes

The wave of new lifeguards rides high: around 600 joined the training in 2023, marking a 3.0% increase from the previous year. Two-thirds of the intake were male candidates, while the number of trainees has risen by a quarter over the last decade.

As inflation dips and swimming pool rates surge, it's clear that the pool party's getting more expensive. But what's driving this financial splash?

  1. Spiking energy and water costs are boosting operational expenses for pool owners, which translates into heftier entrance fees.
  2. Staffing costs are on the rise, as labor expenses for maintaining and operating pools climb steadily.
  3. Many outdoor pools in Germany face substantial repair needs, requiring sizeable financing. High construction costs and inadequate funding programs complicate the financing of crucial refurbishments, leading to increased costs for pool users.
  4. Unabated market growth and increased demand have fueled the industry's growth, compounding operational costs and contributing to the rise in pool prices.

So, while the summer heat beckons, remember to pack extra cash for that much-anticipated pool visit!
