Increase in Highway Tolls by 40 Cents
During the summer travel season, the German Automobile Club (ADAC) advises motorists to avoid refuelling at motorway petrol stations to save money. This recommendation is based on the ADAC's findings that fuel prices at motorway stations are significantly higher compared to non-motorway stations, particularly during peak travel times.
In a recent price comparison, the ADAC found that Super E10 and Diesel prices at motorway stations in regions like North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) are, on average, about 48 cents more expensive per liter compared to non-motorway petrol stations. This price disparity makes it financially beneficial for motorists to refuel at petrol stations outside of the motorway network whenever possible.
The ADAC's findings are supported by the Federal Cartel Office, which found a similar price difference of around 40 cents. The ADAC finds these prices critically high, with the organisation's spokesperson stating, "Price differences of this magnitude are not acceptable."
By driving off the motorway, motorists can save around or more than 20 euros on a 50-litre tank. However, it's important to note that there is a certain margin of error given the small sample size.
The ADAC also advises motorists to fill up their tanks before they leave, as filling up the night before is often cheaper than in the morning. Additionally, the ADAC found that 90% of E10 petrol stations had price differences of at least 30 cents, with a maximum price difference of around 57 cents for Super E10, but also an exception with only a 0.9 cent difference. Similarly, 88% of diesel stations had price differences of at least 30 cents.
In summary, the ADAC recommends motorists to avoid motorway petrol stations and drive off to refuel during the busy summer travel season to reduce fuel costs. While this advice can help motorists save money, it's essential to be mindful of the small sample size and potential variations in fuel prices.
- The ADAC's economic and social policy recommendation to motorists during the summer travel season includes advice to refuel at petrol stations outside of motorway networks, as prices at non-motorway stations are found to be significantly lower than at motorway stations, particularly during peak travel times.
- The automotive industry's business strategy, as indicated by the higher fuel prices at motorway petrol stations, can affect industry profit by potentially diverting consumer spending towards non-motorway stations.
- To further manage personal finance during the summer travel season, the ADAC's advice extends beyond motorway petrol station avoidance, suggesting motorists fill up their tanks before they leave and consider refueling in the evening to take advantage of lower prices at certain stations.
