Increased Costs for Public Transport in Berlin and Brandenburg: Ride the Trains and Buses at a Higher Price Tag
In a move that affects commuters and travellers across Berlin and Brandenburg, the Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg (VBB) has announced a series of fare increases. The changes, effective from a recent date, are a response to rising costs in various sectors.
The CEO of the VBB, Susanne Henckel, has confirmed the updates, which include an increase in the single-ride ticket for the Berlin city area from 2.80 euros to 4.00 euros, a rise of 20 cents. Similarly, the single ride in the tariff area ABC (including Potsdam and Berlin Brandenburg Airport) will now cost 5.00 euros, an increase of 30 cents.
For seniors, the VBB Abo 65Plus will no longer be available. This decision comes alongside the discontinuation of the BC tariff stage, which covered the Berlin outskirts and areas outside the ring, and the 7-day card, annual cards for all target groups, the 10 a.m. card in Berlin, and the 9 a.m. cards in Potsdam, Brandenburg an der Havel, and Frankfurt (Oder).
The price for an AB short trip within Berlin has also risen by 20 cents to 2.80 euros. In cities like Brandenburg an der Havel, Frankfurt (Oder), and Cottbus, single tickets will increase by 20 cents to 2.70 euros.
Comparatively, in Munich, the ticket for Zone M costs 4.10 euros, while in Cologne, the single-ride ticket for the city area costs 3.70 euros. In Hamburg, a single-ride ticket costs 3.90 euros, with a 7% discount for online purchases.
The increased costs are not limited to local transport. Fuel and lubricants for vehicles have seen a 38% increase in cost, electricity has become around 38% more expensive, and the nationwide Germany ticket costs 58 euros per month, affecting fewer passengers.
The inflation rate for passenger transport was almost 35% between the end of 2015 and August 2025. This rise in costs, coupled with the Germany ticket leading to reduced revenue for transport companies and associations nationwide, may have contributed to the VBB's decision to adjust fares.
The monthly subscription for the VBB environmental ticket for the Berlin tariff area AB will cost 81.30 euros. Meanwhile, the four-ride ticket for the Berlin tariff area AB will cost 12.40 euros, an increase of 80 cents. The Berlin AB single-ride ticket, which previously cost 2.70 euros in 2016, now costs 3.80 euros.
These changes mark a significant shift in transport costs across Berlin and Brandenburg, and commuters are encouraged to review their travel plans accordingly.
